Tui Street Renovation Project

Transforming a house into a home is no easy feat but that’s exactly what the team at TUIT did with the Tui Street Renovation project.

The project scope was clear - take an older style house and update the kitchen, flooring, paint job and interior decor, turning it into a space that felt warm, tidy and homely. As the renovation progressed this scope expanded to also include a bathroom upgrade.

Spatial Planning and Design

Before beginning the renovation, extensive spatial planning was conducted to ensure both aesthetics and functionality.

The existing layout featured a closed-off kitchen, a separated dining area, and a poorly positioned laundry. By collaborating closely with the client, we developed a new floor plan that opened up the kitchen and dining space while preserving critical elements like load-bearing walls.

Key Changes to the Layout

Reconfigured kitchen cabinetry for a more cohesive, semi-open plan.
Relocated the laundry entrance to maximise kitchen space and improve flow between rooms.
Enlarged the dining and living area opening by upgrading the lintel, making room for a small breakfast bar—a favourite feature of the client.

Interior Upgrades

To enhance warmth and modernise the look, we restored the solid tawa flooring, added copper fittings, and selected clean, white accents. The combination created a warm, inviting, and homely atmosphere.

Challenges and Solutions

Though minimal, some challenges arose, typical of older homes:

Lack of insulation and single glazing delayed plaster drying.
Multiple layers of wallpaper required extra time to remove.

Despite these, the project only extended by a week to ensure a high-quality finish.

Project Management and Collaboration

Meticulous planning and clear communication were crucial. Before the renovation began, the TUIT team coordinated more than 15 trades to keep the project on schedule.

A trusted team of subcontractors addressed any unexpected issues efficiently. The client was kept informed through regular updates and on-site meetings and had weekend access for their own walk-throughs.

Project Outcome

The Tui Street renovation was a journey of transformation, collaboration, and problem-solving. In the end, the home was beautifully updated, meeting the client’s needs and exceeding their expectations.
